Journal 2: Due Wednesday, July 1

Read and respond to Richard Straub’s “Responding—Really Responding—to Other Students’ Writing.” What were you ideas and attitudes toward revising and responding before reading Straub's essay? Have your opinions changed? How? How can you apply what Straub said to your first workshop? What did you learn about responding to your peers?

  1. Before reading this I didnt really put a lot of effort into revising others papers. I would make corrections for the obvious grammatical or spelling error, and leave a few comments, most them being positive and saything things like "good job". The reason why i edited like this was because no one properly taught me how to edit a paper. After reading Straub's passage, i now feel like i have a better understanding of how to edit and i will definatly try to do what he is saying during our rough draft workshop.

  2. Before I read this article, I knew the importance of reviewing. But being a high school student I didn't take reviewing as seriously as I should have. I would always point out the obvious, like when someone forgot to capitalize something. Also i found that I was too easy on the papers I reviewed. Instead of telling them where they needed improvements, I would just give them a feel-good response like good job or keep up the good work. But after reading that, I realized that responses like that cheat the peer's paper you are responding. Now I feel that I can correctly edit papers, and give the criticism my peers need!

  3. Well before reading this article my idea of revising and responding was just to read over a paper quickly then just jot down some criticisms so I could get the assignment over with. I have always had a negative attitude towards reading papers and making comments on them. I really liked this article though because Richard Straub explains everything about revising and responding to students essays the way it should be explained. When it comes to reviewing the work of other peers most students including I aren’t really interested in reading the paper and helping their peer out. But now after reading this article I really think all these years I should have gone through every paper I graded carefully and given my peers the best advice I had, instead of rushing through it. Now I know that responding to my peers will help them in writing and will also benefit me.
