Journal 3

Read and respond to Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants." Who are the characters and what are they doing? What is the setting or atmosphere like? What clues does the dialogue reveal about what's going on?

There are three characters in Hemingway's short story. There is the american which is the male in the couple. Jig the women he is with. and the waitress who brings out drinks at the station. The setting is at a train station that seems to have a barren landscape around it. It is very hot outside and the women, jig, makes a remark how the hills look like white elephants because of the trees. The atmosphere seems tense and uneasy between the two as they carry out a personal issue in their conversation that isnt really mentioned. The dialogue clues that the man wants the women to have an operation that is very simple and would make thier lives happy again. The women is obviously uneasy and doesnt want to go through with it. Another clue that is mentioned when the women said they could have all of this but the man replies no they cant when they take it away. Probably meaning taking something away from the women in the operation. After a while the women makes the man stop talking and he leaves to drop off their bags. He comes back and asks the women if she is ok she replies yes she is probably making up her mind not to go through with the operation and that they will be happy and continue to love eachother..
Thanks for reading.... JASON NORMAN
