In the story, "Hills Like White Elephants", there are three characters to distinguish from. Jig the women is having a conversation with an American man, while they are being served by the female bartender. The story takes place in a train station located in Madrid Spain. It seemed to me that Jig and the man were a couple that fell in love. They were arguing over the fact that the man was getting ready to leave and while Jig was about to have an operation. It is my belief that the American man traveled to Spain with no intent to fall in love with this girl. But as the story unfolds, they undoubtably fall in love. In the end the man has to make a decision on wether to stay or not. As the train pulls up the arguing ends as the American man decides to stay with Jig.
