The characters of the story "Hills Like White Elephants" are a man and his girlfriend/wife Jig. They are traveling through Spain and they are currently at a train station waiting for the next train to Madrid. They have some time to spare so they decide to have a few drink at a bar at the station while waiting for the train to arrive. It seems to me that the man is trying to convince the girl to have an abortion. I feel like they waited a really long time to have sex and their relationship was great before they did. But once they had sex she got pregnant and their relationship has not been the same. They hope that if she has the abortion their lives will get back to normal and they will be happy again. They both seem very irritated and tired of arguing about dumb things, such as the hills looking like white elephants.
