In Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" the two main characters involved in the story are an older man who is an American and a younger woman who is referred to as a "girl; she is possibly from Spain.  They are traveling from in Spain and they are waiting a train station for their train from Barcelona to Madrid. The weather is very hot outside but the day is bright. The train station seems to be very busy and is full of people trying to stay cool while making it to their destination on time. There appears to be tension in the air between the two and this is apparent by the way that they speak to each other. The American man seems to be more concerned about drinking his beer and making it to the train than what the girl has to say. She on the other hand is slyly trying to keep his attention. I believe that there was some sort of argument because the girl is very concerned about the man not loving her like he used to. She is trying to say and do the right things in order for their life to be as it was in the past. She tries to make silly comments that she hopes will make him laugh or spark a reaction out of him yet she doesn't seem to be getting it. He  continuously reassures her that he still loves her now just as he did before. Its' almost as if they had something major happen in their relationship which is causing them to leave and start anew so that they can fix whatever they have to fix
